All municipal governments in New Brunswick receive leadership and support from the Provincial Department of Local Government. This department serves as a liaison with municipalities and rural communities, and provides advice and guidance on matters relating to finances, administration, policy and infrastructure. The Village of Doaktown is also a member of the Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick, an organization representing 57 municipalities (cities, towns and villages) in the Province of New Brunswick.

The UMNB has divided its member municipalities into “zones,” each of which meet periodically to discuss matters of mutual interest. The Village of Doaktown is a member of Zone 1 which also includes the City of Miramichi, Blackville, Bouctouche, Chipman, Minto, Neguac, Rexton, Richibucto, Rogersville, Saint Antoine, Saint Louis de Kent, and the Rural Community of Upper Miramichi. The village of Doaktown is located in the heart of the Miramichi, along the Miramichi River. The famous Miramichi River is one of the most productive salmon rivers in the world, in both past and present day. Not only is the Southwest Miramichi River among the top 10 cleanest rivers in the world, it is home to the elusive Atlantic salmon that has tempted the skill of men for centuries. Doaktown's history is both colourful and diverse, changing with time and industry. Home to the Atlantic Salmon Museum, the Doak Historic Site, the Old Mill Pond Golf Club, and numerous fishing and outdoor adventure experiences.
